Once More, With Feeling.

Well, I joined a gym today. It seems to be a fairly low-key place, with all the stuff that you'd want in a gym, but only twenty bucks a month and no contract. So I can quit any time! Woo! Yeah, good attitude going into things.

I primarily wanted a gym membership for the exercise classes - yoga and pilates and whatnot. The membership also comes with a monthly session with a personal trainer, so I may take advantage of that and all the various fitness machines, since a caliper test this morning revealed that I am made up of 35% BODY FAT. Way on the "poor" end of the health range for my height and weight. Guffaw! Amazingly, this didn't devistate me as much as I thought such information would (Calvin made appropriately horrified noises, though - I'd like to see the results of the caliper test on HIM). It's more along the lines of, "Well, yeah. I knew I was a big ol' frumpy softie."

Gym Sales Dude was enterprisingly reassuring as we took down some preliminary goals - a couple of inches off of waist and arms, firming up overall, and getting my body fat down. He says my hips are already good and my thighs are quite small (huh! According to whom?), so it's just a matter of toning and firming up all over.

I'm down with that. We'll see how it goes, anyway. Calvin's a little miffed that we spent a chunk of money on home equipment and here I am joining a gym, but I still plan on using our home stuff. I don't want to cut into my home and family time too much with going to the gym, so I figure I'll work out during the week in the evenings at home, and hit the gym on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. My new four day work week coming up in October will be great for this plan.

As for right this moment, well, I'm still trying to take care of my emotional health. I'm not going to worry too much about jumping into any new workout routine this week, since we're going to San Diego on Thursday. But I will try to get up in the mornings while I'm there and take a good long walk on the beach. That will be good for my body AND my spirit.
